Getting the Right Fit
You have read many articles that say you need to get the right bike to fit you. Getting a motorcycle that fits you makes balance and control much more comfortable. The best fit is when you can sit atop a bike with both feet flat on the ground.
Trying to balance a big bike from your tiptoes is shaky at best as well as dangerous when trying to stop. You should be able to reach the handlebars without stretching uncomfortably; the same goes for the foot controls. If the motorcycle doesn’t fit comfortably, it is not for you. Check our blog at WickedStock.com where we discuss things to know before you get your first bike.
Know Before You Buy
Motorcycles come in all shapes and sizes, finding the right bike for you comes down to doing your research. Whether you want a touring, a cruising, or a sportbike, you can get the motorcycle that will fit you. There is a tool to help you get fitted to the right motorcycle for you, the Motorcycle Ergonomics Simulator.
Here is how the simulator works, plug in your height, inseam length, and the motorcycle you are interested in; the program does the rest.
You will be able to see how you will fit the bike you have chosen based on height and inseam length. You should be able to sit on the bike comfortably, and when standing, your feet should be flat on the ground.
The graphic shows the calculated seat height in inches; your forward lean in degrees, if any. The graphic further shows the angle of the bend in the knee by degrees and the angle of your hip in degrees. In the example below, you can see how well you would fit a Honda Gold Wing if you are 5 ft. 9 inches tall with a 31-inch inseam.
The image below shows your feet flat on the ground at 5ft 9in with 31in inseam making for a relaxed stance while holding the bike upright.
It is Worth a Try
You don’t have anything to lose by logging onto the Motorcycle Ergonomics Simulator and check out the program.
We’ve have provided a link above. Using this graphics program to preview how the bike you want to ride will look under you is a way to know before you buy.
Once on the program’s site, you can plug in any motorcycle, you can get readings for handlebar rise, pullback, seat height, peg offset, and peg rise. There is even info that can be plugged in to get the right adjustments for your passenger.
