You might noticed the term “CE” which is a French phrase “Conformité Européene” and it means “European Conformity”. The term was firstly used as “EC Mark” and now it is officially replaced by “CE Marking” in the Directive 93/68/EEC in 1993. CE Marking now is used in all EU official documents. All of this has to do with the European motorcycle safety standards. America has adopted these standards, but they are unofficial, but they are not required by law for street use.
In contrast of America, to ride a motorcycle in Europe, you have to wear a protective apparel that meets these standards. The European Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive 1989, requires any clothing or personal equipment sold to provide protection from injury for example motorcycle clothing, to comply with the relevant European Standard. To comply, the gear has to be independently tested and certified. The manufacturer is then issued with a CE label which shows the motorcycle clothing conforms to the relevant European standard. The clothing or gear must carry a permanently attached CE label with the number of the Standard. The standard for motorcycle jacket, trousers and suits is CE EN 13595.
Today, leather motorcycle clothing, which covers jackets, pants, and one-piece suits, are subject to specific types of destruction testing to determine their suitability. These tests include abrasion resistance, impact resistance to a sharp object, and burst strength. Therefore, if you see a label inside a leather jacket bearing a CE or AS mark, you know you are wearing the right jacket. Armor functions like a helmet for your body. Although a few brands of armor are capable of withstanding multiple impacts in the same spot, play it safe and replace any pads you land on in a serious crash. That’s especially true of back protectors, most of which are definitely single-impact pads – one hit and they are history. Armor consisting of padding bonded to a hard plastic shell should be replaced if the shell cracks on impact or wears through in a slide.
One of the best jackets with CE jacket protection is the motorcycle four season textile race jacket CE protection.
