Our motorcycles serve us well. With our motorcycles and our gear, we travel around cities and states, free and unbound. They transport us to wherever we want to go, whenever we wish to leave and see new sights and explore new horizons. But do we take care of our gear? Do we properly service the very machines that enable us to travel and explore? Do you remember the last time you repaired and cleaned your motorcycle and your gear, then it’s time to do so.
First, to avoid long periods of no maintenance, we must set up a schedule and plan out which items must be cared for and when. For a motorcycle rain suit, it should be washed and dried every time it rains, if you are living in a place where it doesn’t rain often. But if you’re in an area where it does rains often, then every 3-4 times will be best.
You have to take care of your leather gear, so your favorite clothing pieces don’t end up “aging out” and falling apart. One big reason for leather deterioration is your sweat. The salt in your sweat can damage leather if it is left there to dry. For example, if you own a brown leather motorcycle racing jacket, the sweat from your back and armpits will ruin the material if you don’t use a de-salter. After applying the de-salter, you have to use leather shampoo. You can’t wash leather with regular detergent, nor can you wash it in the washer. Leather gear must be hand-washed to preserve its shape and texture.
Unknown damage to your motorcycle could cost you your life if it goes unchecked. Every month, it is a good idea to slowly go over every piece of your motorcycle and check each one for wear and tear. Take a good look at the tires and check if the treading is being sanded down, and how flat the tires are. Flat tires indicate a need for more air or a small hole. Oil shouldn’t be leaking from the engine, and you must replace anything that has rust on it.
Remember that leather motorcycle gloves are made of animal skin, and it can wrinkle and crack if you don’t take good care of it. These gloves can develop rips and tears along the seams, because they’d began to dry and crack. So wiping off any dirt that got on them is not the only solution.
If you can’t always wash your gear, but you want to keep them in tip-top shape, then purchasing items with built-in liners will make it easier to clean your leather jackets and pants. Liners are the fabric that prevents your bare skin from touching the leather, so your sweat doesn’t come in contact with the leather. You can easily pull remove it and throw it into the washer and dryer for fast, easy cleaning. Even armored clothing has liners to make the clothes softer.
